First Battle Report- LOTR Event – Fredericksburg, VA (Game 1)

Meeting engagemenet between Gondor/Rohan and evil forces.

Mission was to kill opposing general and banners to win.

Played against a really nice fellow who had brought his kids and cheetos. Alot of his figures were conversions. Some were really outstanding and I didn’t remember to take close-up pictures. Which is a shame.

Good

    Evil

      DEPLOYMENT SUMMARY
Good: Gondor and Rohan deploy in a line. Rohan helmingas and royal guard take up position on the flanks with the Sons of Eorl reinforcing the warriors on the left. Rangers take up position on a hill directly behind the Gondor heavy infantry in the center.
Evil: The forces of evil deploy their various warbands across the field of battle. Their heavy cavalry line up facing the Rohan cavalry. Trolls and orcs take up residence on the opposite flank. The center is held by spectres, light spearmen and archers.

      TURN 1

Spectres and Gondor have a date

Sons of Eorl laugh off charge by evil riders

      Initial slap fest

Trolls haul ass to make an impact on the game

      COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY
      Good

      • 2 Gondor Rangers
      Evil

      • 4 or 5 Heavy Cavalry
      • All the Spectres and Barrow Wight
      TURN 1 SUMMARY
Good: The forces of good generally standfast with only the Rohan skirmishers spreading out to make use of their throwing spears. The rangers take some shots at the evil archers opposite of them in the center killing a few.

Then the spectres are eventually charged by the warriors of Gondor…and crushed over the course of two turns.

The Sons of Eorl bounce the initial charge of the evil riders for no losses of their own. Then the ferocity and sheer number of attacks made by the Rohan warriors claims a couple of evil warriors in red forcing them back.

Evil: With the archers in the center the only exception all the evil warbands advance; eager to get to grips with the Gondor and Rohan warriors. Shooting for evil was also unexciting with only a few rangers falling victim to posion arrows.

The heavy cavalry facing the Sons of Eorl charge in through the woods. A whirling melee develops with no one gaining the upper hand at first.

The trolls stroll through the woods. Not really concerned with the fate of their comrades. They’ll reach the fight…eventually.

      TURN 2

SOE begin to push enemy cavalry back to their deployment area

Archers after having lost the ranged battle rush forward to lend support

Only a matter of time before the spearmen are finished

Spectres are crushed; Gondor attempts to form a line to receive troll charge

Trolls are pissed at being deployed so far from the scrap

Initial troll charge is hampered by orcs underfoot

Rob decides to call it with the impending collapse of his right flank. The trolls would have to chew through over 1k points of awesome

      COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY
      Good

      • 2 Gondor Rangers
      • 6 Infantry (Rohan/Gondor)
      Evil

      • 4 or 5 Heavy Cavalry
      • Some spearmen
      • All but 3 or 4 archers
      • A couple Orcs
      TURN 2 SUMMARY
Good: The Rohan cavalry, now joined by the skirmishing foot soldiers, continue to punish the evil riders.

Gondor warriors with some help from Rohan encircle the light spearmen in the center.

The Gondor rangers make short work of the archers opposing them and begin to look towards the woods on the right flank where the trolls will appear any minute.
Evil: Things have gone from bad to worse for the evil forces. Their cavalry is in disarray. With both their general and priest precariously exposed.

With the spearmen cut off and their missile troops mostly dead; the horsemen are beginning to think it may be better to fight another day.

The trolls finally break through the woods and see the enemy for the first time. Howling they charge headlong into the forces of good. Unfortunately to little effect. One troll takes pleasure in tossing a Rohan warrior into his cohorts; but beyond that it looks like they’ll be facing a relatively untouched army from Gondor and Rohan all on their own.

At this point; Rob, an excellent fellow and awesome sportsman decides to call the match.

      • Some spearmen
      • All but 3 or 4 archers

      TURN 5

      COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY
      Good

      • 2 Gondor Rangers
      • 6 Infantry (Rohan/Gondor)
      Evil

      • 4 or 5 Heavy Cavalry
      • Some spearmen
      • All but 3 or 4 archers
The inital deployment of the trolls really sealed the fate of the evil forces. They were too far away to have any meaningful impact on the game. Brian’s archery was super human with him killing four opposing archers in one volley early. Charging the SOE didn’t do Rob any favors either; and his spectres really should have been supporting the trolls on their charge not floating into charge range by themselves.

Extremely enjoyable game tactics and dice rolls aside. Rob was rusty on the rules and I’m new so Brian was able to teach both of us and we all had an enjoyable time. Rob’s boys were also present and had a blast eating cheetos and getting food crumbs on Rob’s dice.
